I’ve been updating my blog’s theme over the past few days, and it feels a bit less bland than before I think. Now it roughly follows the tokyo night colour scheme, each post type os styled with a different accent, and a bunch of other small modifications that make it overall more readable.

England to Rotterdam

I went on a bit of a different style of trip last weekend. My partner found there was a ferry from England to the Hook of Holland, including overnight options with cabins, and also day journeys.

We went for a Friday night trip with a cabin so we could sleep, and then coming back bank holiday Monday daytime. It’s certainly a mode of transport I’m interested in trying for other trips in the future.

We stayed in a nearby city, Rotterdam, for the weekend. And while it was a good trip overall, I’ve probably been so spoiled with my previous European city breaks that it doesn’t feel like a city that warrants a return.

There was some interesting architecture, albeit a lot more modern than I’m used to. So I did manage to get a few photos, which I have decided to crop as squares, as I still like to reminisce over the days of early Instagram.

I did some reading after the trip about Rotterdam, and found that it was heavily destroyed in WWII, so that probably explains the modern feel, and lack of deep history. Again, I’m spoiled, as I work in London.

Lord of the Rings has embedded itself into my nervous system so much. Whenever I see a clip of the films, hear a second of the soundtrack, or even have a thought that somehow makes me think of a quote from the books, I’m literally compelled to either read omens the books or watch the movies in the next few hours.

I shared a quick preview of an app I was building recently, and it’s in a pretty good state right now, so I thought it was a good time to share more information.

In short, it’s a Micro.blog client for Mac.

To go into more detail, it’s a way for me to use Micro.blog that tries to focus more on publishing, and less on scrolling. It’s intentionally slow, and “misses” a few features.

There are four tabs on the right of the app:

WRITE - Write new posts, micro posts, keep drafts, and also reply to other posts.
TIMELINE - Latest posts.
MENTIONS - Latest mentions.
PROFILE - My latest posts.

Note each one only says “latest”. This is because this app does not have any pagination or way to scroll through older content. All you can do is refresh. Right now that’s intentional, but I may be more flexible in the future.

I don’t know if I will ever release this, for now it will sit as my personal client. I’m not sure the tradeoff of polish, support, and distribution nonsense is worth it right now.

it’s being developed solely with Claude Code. I’ve worked on a few project documents, skills, and processes for this project. I feel like I’m at a point with Claude now where I can first design a product, breakdown a project into tasks, and then tackle them one at a time. I’m working on this at work as well, so I’ll probably write more about this when it’s been tested more.

There’s loads of strikes on the London Underground this week. So instead of a 15 min ride on the Circle line, I decided to walk from Tower of London to Euston. Apple Maps said 1 hour 30 mins. I managed it just under an hour!

Considering the constant weaving through tourists and slow walkers, it still managed to be a good walk.

Every time I see a piece of writing about the MacBook Neo, I’m tempted to buy one. It’s objectively worse than my current M1 MacBook Pro. But it’s at such a low price, that the fact that it’s an interesteing product to me is weighing heavy.

I have too much to say

I like to talk a lot. Not using my mouth, but with my keyboard. I like writing. I feel like I have a lot to share.

But my problem is that I have a lot of things going on in my head. I have a lot to say about a lot of things.

Strangely enough, that means I write a lot less than I want to.

I have urges to write about nearly every aspect of my life. Whether it’s my personal experiences, working as a software engineer, reacting to news in the industry, or just commentary on life. But I feel like this can’t all live in the same place. And it’s probably suited to different audiences.

Some people like to write essays, others prefer a very informal micro blog, then there are people who just maintain blogs on technical topics, a big chunk of people enjoy posting to social media, there are personal bloggers, topical bloggers, the list is endless. They each come with different formats, audiences, suitable platforms, etc.

My problem is that I want to do it all.

I want a personal blog, I want a blog for technology opinions, I want another for more refined essays, I want to also have a super frequent micro blog, and I’m sure there are more. With each of these comes friction. Should I keep it on one blog? One domain? How do I somehow connect everything together? Does it matter? Does my writing need to live forever?

I go through phases in my life where my opinions just flip like a switch. Then at some later point, they switch back.

Maybe it doesn’t matter.

In fact, I’m nearly certain it doesn’t.

Maybe I should just keep writing, about everything, everywhere.

I wrote about how it’s not worth upgrading from my M1 MacBook Pro. But there is one scenario in which I could buy an additional Mac. That would be if Apple brought back the MacBook.

I’d love a 12" MacBook running some kind of M chip that I could use when travelling or when I’m doing simple tasks.

I think my Mac is becoming more and more “linux inspired” by the day. I’ve got yabai installed as my tiled window manager, alacritty as my terminal, dmenu-mac as my application launcher, and I also live in the terminal using tmux, neovim, and a bunch of custom scripts. What’s next?

I’ve been playing around with bash scripts today. Most recent is one that uses fzf to list alacritty themes, and then lets me change it without editing the config file manually.

It’s saturday, and I’ve got nothing to do until Arsenal play in around 8 hours. So I’m pretty sure that means I’m going to have to build something. What I want, is a quick way to post a micro post to my eleventy blog via the CLI. But I’m not sure what route to go down. A complex shell script? Maybe a custom Neovim plugin, or go all out and build a tool that uses the GitHub REST API?

Just spent some time improving pst (https://github.com/chrishannah/pst), it now supports drafts and published posts. Example command: pst draft "hello, world".

It’s still only available to install via cargo, so I need to get it on something like homebrew soon.
